I Present to You: An "All Access" Fitness Plan
Hi everybody!
Welcome to what is going to be a very eventful blog series! I have never done anything like this before, so I am not only looking forward to sharing but seeing my own growth as we navigate this journey together.
Throughout my life, I have been incredibly passionate about physical activity and fitness for lifelong health. As a student, I prioritized my participation in sports and Physical Education classes to develop my own physical literacy while also using it as an opportunity for socializing. However, as I went from Phys Ed class to Phys Ed class, I noticed how little the students from the Special Education class were engaged and challenged in their learning. It wasn't until I saw an Educational Assistant guide her student through a structured workout that I realized how deprived they are from a true Phys Ed experience. Each student, regardless of classroom, grade level, age, and ability is deserving of an opportunity to learn - both in traditional classrooms and in the gymnasium. Often times for these students, high school is it for them. That is, what they learn in our four walls are the skillset they are left with for the rest of their lives. It is our role as educators to meet them where they are and develop their skills to set them up for success in life.
That is why, for the next 12 weeks, I am going to develop an "All Access" Physical Education/Fitness Plan (the name is a work in progress) so that no student in my future classrooms go unacknowledged or unsupported.
In order to keep myself accountable and measure my own progress, I will set up checkpoints for myself along the 12-week period. I hope to address a number of movement forms and fundamental skills, so these checkpoints will reflect the different skills I hope for these students to acquire along with their corresponding timelines.
The structure of this project is likely to change once my research begins, so I will leave my formal Genius Hour question until next week.
UPDATE: My Genius Hour question is "How can I ensure that Physical Education is truly "accessible"?
That's all for now! Since projects like these can be overwhelming in nature, I'll leave you with one of my favourite mantras:
WE CAN DO HARD THINGS!
Hannah
Hi Hannah,
ReplyDeleteYour question is such an important one that, as you said, too often goes unasked. Even though Phys. Ed is not one of my teachables, I'm so excited to see your plan! :)
